How Do I Tell If My Tension Is Correct?
Proper thread tension is essential for producing clean, professional embroidery. Fortunately, one of the easiest ways to evaluate tension is by examining the finished stitches.
Check the Top Side of the Fabric
Start by looking at the top of the embroidery design.
Ask yourself:
- Are the stitches laying flat and smooth?
- Is the design well-covered without gaps?
- Is any bobbin thread visible on the top side?
If the embroidery looks clean and balanced on the front, there is usually no need to adjust the tension.
Signs the Tension Needs Adjustment
Loose or Loopy Stitches
If the top stitching appears loose or forms loops, the upper thread tension may be too loose and may need to be tightened.
Bobbin Thread Showing on Top
If bobbin thread is visible on the top side of the design, the upper thread tension may be too tight, or the bobbin tension may be too loose.
Fabric Puckering
If the stitches are pulling the fabric and causing puckering, the upper thread tension may be too tight and should be adjusted accordingly.
Final Tip
The appearance of the embroidery on the front side of the fabric is the best indicator of proper tension. If the design looks smooth, balanced, and free of loops, puckering, or visible bobbin thread, your tension settings are likely correct.
